Play and Enrichment
Ferrets should get at least 2-4 hours of active play per day. They are social animals and enjoy playing with humans. Most ferrets also enjoy playing with other ferrets. Many ferret toys are available in stores and online, but ferrets are also happy with household items. Essentials are tunnels/tubes and play pits filled with biodegradable peanuts or jingle balls which target a ferret's natural desire to dig and tunnel.
Here's a video of ferrets playing in a tube.
Ferrets should be provided with daily 'Enrichment Activities' to help keep them healthy. They are natural problem solvers.
Sample Enrichment Activities
- Rearrange their cage or play area or rotate toys in and out of use
- Bring in items from outside, such as snow, leaves, etc, for them to explore
- Play CDs of bird sounds
- Put toys in unexpected places, such as the bathtub
- Place folded blankets or sheets on the floor for them to tunnel through
- Drag a sheet across the floor through the house and allow them to jump on and off as you move
- Plastic and paper bags (always supervise)
- Tissue paper in a gift bag
- Play dates with other ferrets (make sure all ferrets are healthy and up-to-date on vaccines)
